Weekly Highlights: March 15-19

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

This week, check in with our teachers and their weekly highlights.

Special note: Sue McCrary and her class are looking for another senior citizen to shop for on Tuesdays - please get in touch if you know anyone who’d appreciate the help!

From Sue McCrary:

In Life Skills class, we often talk about the ways that all of us can contribute to our communities by giving.  We read an awesome story on Monday about a horse named Madeline who had been abused and was suffering from a severely deformed leg.  A woman in Madeline’s community who owned a ranch for rescued horses brought her back to the ranch to help nurse her back to health.  When the vet was examining Madeline, he said she would need an operation on her leg soon.  It would cost thousands of dollars and the ranch owner had no way of paying for it.  Word got out and a young girl from the community decided to help.  Her parents were planning a birthday party for her so she asked her friends to bring money for Madeline’s operation instead of gifts.  They gave enough money to pay for everything Madeline needed, and the operation was a success!  We all have the ability to make a difference to someone.

This week, students are also learning to cook quesadillas , so they’ll have a healthy, quick dish that they’ll always know how to prepare.  We don’t just teach academics holistically, we teach the child holistically, including those simple skills - like making lunch - that leave kids knowing how to stay healthy and take care of themselves.

___________
From Sarah Trout:

We have moved onto working with shamrocks, rainbows, and leprechauns!  We will move through obstacles to get to our learning treasures.  For example, the students will go under a rainbow and over a rainbow to gather letter shamrocks and skip back to put the shamrock on top, on bottom, or in the middle of their leprechaun.  First, though, we will make the shamrocks.  The students will lace ribbon around them and decorate them.  Also, we will mix different colors to make new colors.  Each student will learn how colors blend and interact as they use them in adorning a leprechaun hand puppet.

Next week we’ll be focusing on eggs, bunnies, and spring time.

From Katherine Taylor:

The kids are really making headway on their reading.  So many have completed reading comprehension books this week and have moved on to new ones.  I hope that with warmer weather approaching that they can still find 15 minutes to read every day even if the sun is shining.

Peter had the funny comment for the day when he said “my birthday is Thursday and you can give me a card a day early if you want!”  I guess I better get busy with that and get one ready!
