July 29th, 2010

While our students are off enjoying their summer holiday, we wanted to check in with our teaching staff to see what they’re thinking about this summer. We spoke with Sarah Trout, who has been working with us for over two years now, about how she learned about TWLS, what she loves about it and what she does for fun.

Reading Instruction at TWLS, Part 3

March 10th, 2010

Post by Ann Rooney

Welcome back for Part 3 of our ongoing series on TWLS’s Core Academics and reading programs.  Last week we talked about phonemic awareness, what it means, and how it differs from the more commonly-discussed subject of phonics.  This week, we’re going to look directly at phonics.  Phonics teaches children the relationship between the letters of written language and the sounds of spoken language. It is the sound symbol relationship we use to read and write words. Scientific based research concludes that the use of a systematic direct instruction approach is particularly beneficial for students having difficulty learning to read.

Read Across America Day

March 4th, 2010

Every March 2nd, in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, the National Education Association sponsors a nationwide reading of Seuss’s books in order to inspire kids to read and families to read to their kids. This year, the 106th anniversary of his birth and the 13th anniversary of Read Across America, 45 million children and adults came together at home and in their schools to put on the Cat in the Hat’s trademark red-and-white stovepipe hat and read to each other. TWLS - teachers and students alike - has always been delighted to be involved in Read Across America Day. This year, we gathered our Seuss stuffed animals, from Lorax to Cat to creatures even more mysterious and our Seuss books to listen to all our students get up on stage and read. It was wonderful to see them go up in front of the whole class, feeling comfortable with and excited about reading in public. But enough description - here’s the kids themselves!

Weekly Highlights: January 11-15

January 12th, 2010

For parents who’d like to keep up to date on the lessons your kids are learning and the fun they’re having, here’s a few highlights:

This week, the kids have been learning a lot of practical skills - reading, ASL, and sports.

·         In Sonday, all the students have been making remarkable progress in their reading skills.

·         At recess, we’ve been learning the rules of basketball & playing some too!

·         In ASL class, we were introduced to new signs about outdoor adventures.  For example, we learned to sign “backyard”, “explore”, “forest”, and many terms for adventurous animals.

Not only that, but there’s been some creative work too.  One group is making holiday placemats using leaves, glitter, construction paper, feathers, markers, and crayons.

What should you ask your kids about this week?

Ask them to show you two new ASL signs!
