Community Service and Special Needs Students

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Two weeks ago, while one TWLS class was at Stages Theater learning about drama, their peers were outside in the cool, crisp spring air for a Community Service Project.

For the day, they walked up and down the Highway 55 Frontage Road, collecting trash to dispose of properly.

As they walked, teachers Sue McCrary and Sarah Trout led a discussion on the purpose of community service, and how even a small effort like picking up some garbage blowing in the breeze can make a difference to the community.

Part of the TWLS life skills program is preparing special needs students to thrive both individually and as part of a larger community. Thus, we first teach them skills that build independence like how to cook everything from quesadillas to Rice Krispie Treats and how to manage their own money. Then we teach those skills that they need in order to fully join in the life of their community and to be responsible for its well-being. Building community and picking up trash can even be fun!
