About TWLS

Our hopes and dreams for our son are starting to be answered because he attends this school. Our son has ADHD and other learning disabilities. I believe that from grades K-5 our son “wandered” through school, going from mainstream to special education classes. He never fit in anywhere; he never talked much. Within 6 months of our son attending this school, he could finally be himself. He finally realized that he could read, write and do math problems because this school teaches him at his level. He doesn’t have to hide anymore.

We Are Education Specialists

The Whole Learning School (TWLS) specializes in successfully addressing the academic, social and emotional concerns of sudents with special needs through nurturing, innovative and challenging programs. Some of the learning challenges addressed at our school include Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADD and ADHD, Sensory Integration Disorder and developmental disabilities.

Our program is more than just academics. We teach the whole student, incorporating academics with life and social skills, self regulation, sensory awareness and the arts. We focus on the student’s whole life, creating benchmarks for their achievement at school, at home and in the community.

Classroom teachers have master’s degrees and extensive backgrounds in special education. Each classroom also has a licensed teaching assistant and a student-teacher ratio of 9:1 or less.

Our Values

TWLS is committed to creating and maintaining a trusting, safe environment where learning is enjoyable and students receive direct instruction and assistance as they develop responsibility and independence.  All aspects of the school’s organization, curriculum and life-skills activities are child-centered and designed to accommodate individual learning styles so that all students may experience success.  Here, children can learn in a variety of ways: some learn best by doing, others by listening and still others by seeing or reading.  Students read, write and think, but also paint, play music and express themselves through drama.  Our program allows students to use their heads, hands, and hearts in an environment where they feel acceptance and safety.

TWLS does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation or national origin.

Our Developmental Assets Program

We focus on imbuing students with the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets.  The Developmental Assets are concrete, common-sense, positive qualities and experiences essential to raising successful young people.

These assets have the power during critical adolescent years to influence choices young people make and to help them become caring, responsible adults.

The Developmental Asset framework is categorized into two groups of 20 assets, external and internal.  External assets are the positive experiences young people receive from the world around them.  These 20 assets are about supporting and empowering young people, about setting boundaries and expectations, and about positive and constructive use of young people’s time.  External assets identify important roles that families, school, congregations, neighborhoods, and youth organizations can play in promoting healthy development.

The twenty internal assets identify those characteristics and behaviors that reflect positive internal growth and development of young people.  These assets are about positive values and identities, social competencies, and commitment to learning.  They will help young people make thoughtful and positive choices and, in turn, be better prepared for situations in life that challenge their inner strength and confidence.
