“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” - Benjamin Franklin

Who We Are

Welcome to The Whole Learning School, a Twin Cities’ private school for children with special needs. We focus on providing an individualized education that teaches essential life skills, social awareness and interaction, and academics that prepare students to achieve a fulfilling and independent life.

The Whole Learning School is designed to help our “specially-abled” students succeed in a learning environment that understands and supports their needs. Our expertly-trained staff provide a multi-sensory, hands-on and reflective learning experience that gives students the opportunity to truly learn. In addition, we provide small class sizes (2-9 students) and learning plans customized to each child’s current developmental level and learning needs for mastering critical knowledge and skills.

Most importantly, students at The Whole Learning School enjoy meaningful membership in our school community. They experience a safe, supported, and intimate learning environment where they feel physically and emotionally secure. Together, they are engaged and motivated to learn and grow. Our integrated program is a journey that enables students - who may have struggled in traditional environments - to become confident, independent self-advocates prepared for their next steps in life.

Our Students

The Whole Learning School enrolls students between the ages of 7 and 18 who have a variety of cognitive, neurological or developmental disabilities. Our students all experience substantial challenges in learning, relationship and social skill development, and in their capacity for independent living. In addition, they are likely to have needs related to attention deficits, sensory issues, processing speed and often are working significantly behind their academic grade level.

The Whole Learning School does not limit enrollment to children based on diagnosis or disorder, but rather, offers our specialized school environment for challenged learners who share some or all of the above characteristics.

  • Peter Rabbit Narrowly Escapes McGregor’s Hoe

The Whole Learning School Players presented “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” for their Winter Showcase recently.  Music Teacher Amy Madson and Drama Teacher Lori Opsal worked together with TWLS students to re-tell the classic Beatrix Potter story with original songs, set to familiar tunes, so that the audience could sing-a-long too.

  • TWLS Students Learn Functional Life Skills

The students at TWLS have been learning, practicing, and perfecting some very important functional life skills that will help them become successful adults.  Recently, students have been learning how to complete everyday chores that they will require to live independently.  Right now, the chores we are learning about and practicing include: Raking and bagging leaves, shoveling snow, brushing off/ scraping car windows, taking out the garbage, and relining the garbage can.  The lessons (and chores) change throughout the year as the functional life skill units change.  In addition to what they learn in school, students are required to practice at least twice each week at home and track their progress.  Imagine that…chores as homework!
